    • this post really spoke to me this morning. There are plenty of times when I feel this way when writing, I try to obey the rules but it feels stifling

      • I feel that rules have no real place alongside creativity. I see them more as suggestions than rules. Most of the time they are just opinion and many of the most successful writers out there break them. I’m glad that you found the post useful. ☺

  2. Exactamundo! Dogmatically following rules can become can become a tiresome and confined way to write and you’re right – sometimes the end product winds up looking like something for an overhead projector.

  3. I really like “Stuck in a Rut” – too much reliance on rules makes for dull, ponderous and sometimes pompous writing. I threw out the book years ago. Some people criticize my writing for technical reasons but what the fuck writing is not a technical exercise. I absolutely love your freestyle writing and I sure hope you stick with it. Fun to write = Fun to read. That’s what it’s all about, right?
